ASYLUM

Asylum allows immigrants who are already in the United States and who have a well-grounded fear of returning to their home country to stay lawfully in the United States.

CITIZENSHIP

Individuals are either born United States citizens or become United States citizens after birth. To become a citizen at birth, an individual was either born in the United States, born outside the United States territory if both parents are United States citizens and other requirements are met.

DEFENSE FOR REMOVAL PROCEEDINGS

After a person is arrested or undergoes an investigation, a removal proceeding is scheduled to determine whether he or she will be deported. The immigrant receives a "Notice to Appear" (NTA) from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, part of the federal government's Department of Homeland Security.

Skilled Workers (H): H visa is issued to a nonimmigrant for the purpose of temporary employment in the United States.

FAMILY BASED PETITIONS

Immigration through an Immediate Relative

As a foreign national, you may be qualified to apply for a U.S. green card through your parents, children, spouse, or siblings. Whether you can apply immediately or will have to wait depends upon the family relationship.

INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION

The adoption procedures vary from country to country, most countries require that prior to any court action, a child placed for adoption be legally recognized as an orphan or, in the case where a parent is living, be legally and irrevocably released for adoption in a manner provided for under local foreign law.
